Farnsworth Cottage

Additions and renovations to an early 20th century Dutch Colonial cottage on the North Fork of Long Island. The house was built in the early 20th century for people with servants; the kitchen was placed in the coolest (northeast) corner of the first floor, away from views of the water. The new owners, with a small child and no servants, wished to improve the house in terms of amenities and convenience (including views for the kitchen) without losing the character of the original. New work has a traditional feel, but subtle differences give clues to many of the changes.

The addition across the north side of the house and projecting beyond the house to the east provides space for amenities: a porte-cochère, vestibules at main and kitchen entries, coat closet, laundry room, and powder room. The low roof over these spaces mirrors that of the south porch. At the east, the geometry of the addition shifts in order to bring the work space of the new kitchen out to the setback line and provide views of the water.
